On September 19th, Monash University hosted its annual Student Volunteer Awards Night, honouring the contributions of student volunteers who dedicate their time to enrich campus life and create a positive impact on the university community. The night was filled with lively music, dancing, and a delectable array of food, as students, staff, and alumni gathered to celebrate the critical role that volunteers play in fostering Monash’s inclusive and supportive environment. The awards highlighted student volunteers as the backbone of the Monash experience, helping to build connections and advance future career opportunities for themselves and others.
Throughout the evening, outstanding individuals were recognised for their dedication and commitment. Holly Guthrie, a key member of the Monash University Netball Club, was one such honouree. Holly’s journey began in 2020 when she joined the club as a player. After a period abroad on exchange, Holly returned with renewed enthusiasm, quickly progressing into the club’s highest competitive division. Her commitment was evident in her consistent attendance and her willingness to receive and implement feedback to enhance her skills. Holly’s dedication to the club was formally recognised when she was appointed as Vice President at the 2024 MUNC AGM. In addition to her work with the Netball Club, Holly has actively supported the Women in Sport network and attended the network's inaugural 2024 retreat, demonstrating her commitment to promoting women’s sports at Monash.
'I had an amazing night at the Monash University Student Volunteer Awards with Team Monash. Being appreciated with a collection of dedicated sporting volunteers was really special. It was a massive achievement to have 2 members of the Monash University Netball Club executive committee being Lara our Secretary as well as myself as Vice President being nominated. The netball club has had a big transition year and the committee has really stepped up and dedicated themselves above and beyond. To receive an award that acknowledges the dedication of not only myself but my wider committee, has been extremely generous' Holly exclaimed.
Another remarkable volunteer celebrated at the event was Qianyi (Caitlin) Yuan, whose work has transformed the Monash Squash Club’s culture and significantly advanced gender inclusion. Caitlin took on a leadership role as the organiser of the Squash Club’s Women’s Open Session 2024 on International Women’s Day, an event designed to foster inclusivity and encourage greater female participation in squash. Her efforts have led to a historic milestone, with women now making up over 30% of the club’s members—a figure never seen before. Her initiatives have fostered a supportive and enthusiastic atmosphere at the club’s training sessions, creating a welcoming environment for both new and seasoned players alike.
The awards night, infused with a spirit of gratitude and celebration, served as a reminder of the invaluable contributions made by Monash’s student volunteers. These students exemplify the Monash spirit of leadership, inclusion, and dedication, making the university experience truly memorable and unique. Monash University and Team Monash congratulate all the winners and applaud their efforts, which have left a lasting impact on the community and set a standard of excellence for future students.
