Congratulations to Tess Lloyd, Monash's first athlete to be officially announced as part of the 2020 Australian Olympic team!

The Monash arts student is bound for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and will be competing in the 49erFX class sail alongside teammate Jaime Ryan.

Tokyo will be Tess' Olympic debut, something that seemed impossible eight years ago when the 24-year-old suffered a terrifying head injury requiring surgery and leaving her future sailing career in doubt after a 3-week induced coma.

However, dedication and perseverance paid off late last month when the news broke and her dream came true.

"It has been a long journey but every second has been worth it," Lloyd said to Team Monash.

"[It's] very exciting to finally say we have qualified for the Olympic Games...now its time to step it up and aim to be on the podium in Tokyo.

"Thank you to Monash along the way for being so understanding with my studies, allowing me to compete at such a high level at the same time as doing some studying."

Tess has been defying the odds for years and this incredible achievement required an unmatched amount of hard-work and sacrifice, but the real journey is only just beginning.

Go get 'em Tess! We are right behind you!
