Women in Sport Luncheon

Monash University's inaugural Women in Sport Luncheon is an event that celebrates female leadership in Sport for Monash based sporting clubs and varsity programs.

The event aims to create a network that supports our student female sport leaders and provides opportunities for their development. We want to kickstart a journey to leverage sports participation at Monash with an ecosystem that has a goal of fast tracking leadership opportunities and the development of our female student athletes. The journey from participation to contribution should be nurtured and we want to create an environment where aspiration and inspiration continue to be modelled and celebrated.

The Luncheon will provide an opportunity to initiate greater conversations about how to overcome the barriers to female participation in sport and encourage innovation that supports this vision.

Female sport participation

Research shows that female participation between the ages of 18 to 24 years old in organised sport drops significantly as participants stop school sport and do not continue on to community clubs. Time pressures of work, study, financial considerations and family needs are some of the key factors behind this drop in participation.

This age group in particular makes up a large cohort of the university demographic and we are committed to supporting and developing opportunities for them to continue their sporting journeys throughout and after their time at Monash.

Guest Speaker: Lauren Jackson AO OLY

This year's inaugural event will host a Q & A with Australian Basketballer, Lauren Jackson AO OLY.

Lauren is one of Australia’s greatest female basketballers and was crowned an All-Star in her first WNBA season.

Throughout her sporting career she became the youngest WNBA MVP, joined the  Australian Women's National Basketball Team at 16 years old and competed in 4 Olympic games, claiming 3 Silver medals and 1 Bronze medal.

These experiences give Lauren great insight into the world of basketball, life as an elite athlete and the challenges of performing at the highest level.

Her hard work and dedication to life in and around sport make her an inspirational role-model to women all around the world.
