Monash University held it’s annual Elite Student Performer Scheme (ESPS) Welcome Dinner on Tuesday 28th March.

It was a fantastic evening for both students and staff alike. Not only was there the opportunity to hear from esteemed guest speakers such as Professor Sharon Pickering, Professor Robert Brooks, but also the chance to be a part of a Q and A session with as well student athletes Rebecca Henderson (Athletics) and Kipp Smith (Gymnastics).

New and returning students got the chance to mingle with others from a wide range of disciplines- undoubtedly creating lasting friendships and networks, while enjoying a complimentary meal.

The ESPS program serves to support elite student athletes and performers (at a National or International level) with balancing their discipline and their studies, by offering a range of support services and benefits. From complimentary gym memberships to faculty support, ESPS helps students to reach their potential in both areas.

MC for the evening was Professor Sharon Pickering, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Education) & Senior Vice-President, and Professor Robert Brooks, Deputy Dean (Education) in the Faculty of Business and Economics featured as guest speaker. They both spoke highly of all ESPS students, and formally welcomed them into the valuable network.

Both speakers assured the students that the university and its services are there to support ESPS students, and encouraged them to make the most of it.

ESPS students also got the chance to hear from an inspiring student panel.

Bachelor of Biomedical Science student and Race Walking Olympian Bec Henderson talked about the importance of informing teaching staff of sporting commitments early, so that managing students’ studies can be easier for both parties, as well as showing an appreciation for timetabling support as part of the scheme.

Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) & Bachelor of Science student and Gymnastics Australia representative Kipp Smith spoke about the importance of getting to know Unit Coordinators, as well as utilising all of what the ESPS program has to offer.

The athletes in the student panel gave awe-inspiring memorable recounts of their personal experiences in the sport, while vouching for the variety of support services available at Monash for student athletes.

Thank you to all speakers and staff who were in attendance for the evening!
