The first of the Big Blue Varsity Challenge Multi Sport events kicked off at Monash’s Clayton on Monday 15 April with teams from Monash University and the University of Melbourne battling for the win.

This year saw the introduction of mixed varsity roundnet to the mix, joining men’s and women’s soccer, men’s and women’s touch rugby, women’s squash and tennis and men’s hockey. Teams from both sides were joined by a 100-strong crowd of spectators, who cheered on their favourite teams.

Both universities came out of the clash tied up four apiece, with Monash taking the trophy in men’s soccer and touch rugby, mixed roundnet and women’s tennis. We are so proud of our student athletes for their phenomenal performances.

Team organiser, Hugo Ragg was thrilled at the inclusion of roundnet in Varsity, stating “it's really great to have roundnet added to the Big Blue this year. It was such a fun event and a great opportunity to showcase what competitive and high-level roundnet looks like, especially as 5 of the athletes on the night will be going to London later this year for the Roundnet World Championships. Thank you to Team Monash for supporting roundnet.”

Current Big Blue Varsity Challenge scores stand in the University of Melbournes favour of 7-6. We’d like to thank Melbourne University for taking part again and can’t wait for the next events!
